“Work on” meaning use as a computer, or “work on” meaning repair?
If you go on line you can find so much in the way of repairing a Mac. As long as you con't get into the core you'd be okay.
Need a lot more information then you given, year, model, OS, issue.
Usually, Intel Macs can be SOMEWHAT repairable. If you have a common problem, it is worth researching it to determine whether Apple has a special warranty coverage for it, such as the infamous MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard problem.
If you seek help here, we need model, year, memory (RAM), storage (SSD or drive size), and current operating system. For instance:
Late 2013 21" iMac with 1TB conventional drive and 8GB RAM, MacOS 10.15.x
Then we need a good description of the problem, such as, "Flashing floppy disk icon on startup. Will not boot."
If you have an M1 notebook computer, (MB Air, MB Pro), the batteries and keyboards and screens are somewhat repairable. The ports on the M2 machines are somewhat repairable, too. But RAM and drive space cannot be altered on Apple Silicon devices.
If your unit is an iMac you have only one board and it is $600.00 to exchange with another rebuilt board.
Best of luck..............wes

A suggestion: Call Apple Tech Support (it is free) at 800-275-2273 and let the automated voice direct you to the proper area. If the tech cannot resolve the problem, and they are pretty good, and repair is necessary, the tech can get you an appointment at an Apple store and a real Apple pro will evaluate your problem and tell you the cost of repair
