After taking a picture, the viewfinder will display multiple images from prior shoots, which still remain on the SD card. Why does this occur, and how can this be stopped? Only want to review the most current shot. Any ideas?

Check to see what options exist for "review".
My Canon has multiple, including four at a time.

Check your menu system labeled...Playback.

Not a Canon digital owner but when in playback, sometimes a plus or minus feature will show more photos or get you down to one. Plus usually getting you to one. Minus making the photos smaller displaying more so you can scroll thru them faster to get to a chosen photo.

In the Menu , The playback is not set to how you want to view your photos. There are several options for viewing. Also you need to look in Display/auto review (in the menu). Personally, I have auto review turned off. I the on position you cannot take multiple shots because the camera immediately displays the last shot you made. I no longer own the a7Riii but have the a7Riv, so I can't tell you exactly which menu items to go to.
