Does the slight wing blur add or detract from the first two butterfly photos, or do you prefer the last two? Planning to enter in a magazine contest.

Well, it does depict movement.

Hmmm.

To me, the wing blur detracts. They are not a fast flyer anyway.

I think the third one is a keeper. Nicely done.

I'm ok with minor wing movement. Clean up the dust spot in #2. #3 has a complex distracting background. #4 turned out really well. On balance I think #1 is your strongest entry, with #4 right behind.

I think that the idea of showing a attractive wing blur photo is the body head are in focus & sharp with only showing movement in the wings. Just my opinion & doesn't mean all blur couldn't be a nice photo. No matter what, you can enter & always have a chance.

Blur in hummingbird wings is acceptable so why not flutterbys? As long as the body, legs and antennae are sharp, why not convey motion with a blurring of the fluttering wings?

For the first, I think there is too much blur. If you are looking of a depiction of movement, a bit faster shutter speed. Personally, I am not too fond of upside down butterflies and having the butterfly flying away from you is not the best presentation. Good luck.

Some good points but all the butterflies are right side up.

I prefer not to have wing-blur in butterfly images. They fly too slow for it to look natural. If you are trying for a different look, it could be ok if done correctly.

The last two are the best IMHO.
