Hi.....I have a few cameras that I shoot with, sometimes in the same session or occasion. Old and not so old, I try not to let them sit idle for too long. Like most cameras, they have a User Settings / Set-Up Menu that offers the following choices/formats for recording the shot date:
YY/MM/DD;
MM/DD/YY;
DD/MM/YY;
I just checked; and set all of them to the same format. Silly Me, I was having trouble sorting my catalog and web-display page by date? I think part of the problem was due to the different date formats I had been inadvertently using. I might be the only multi-camera user that made this little mistake....so my epiphany and lesson learned is…make sure to use the same date format on all cameras you shoot with.....consistency has it;s benefits!

I think YY/MM/DD makes the most sense. It sorts alphabetically and chronologically the same. Like regular numbers, the most significant elements are on the left and least significant elements on the right.

It's also pretty similar to ISO-8601, which permits YYYYMMDD.

But I should note that the date is written in the EXIF data and Lightroom will read the date no matter which camera you have. Other software will probably read the date properly also.

I use the ISO-8601, which permits YYYYMMDD approach. However, I preface that with my camera code and add a "roll number" after the DD.

Thank D.....BTW....I set them all with the YY/MM/DD (like they should have been)

Thanks Bob.....this was my mistake for not checking ALL the setting on ALL cameras before use.....but never too late to correct and make. Just thought I'd mention it as cheap advice for other multi-camera users.....it's all good .... (I admit I'm not familiar with ISO-8601 setting?)

While you are at it, synchronize the time of day clocks so that if you use 2 at a time the sorting makes sense.

I rename all processed photos to begin with YYYYMMDD. But I like the EXIF data to show DD/MM/YYYY.

I set all my cameras to YYYYMMDD. AKA ISO-8601. Or at least YYMMDD. If the device does not have that feature or I cannot convert on upload to my computer, I will manually change dates to YYYYMMDD. The only big problem with any of this is some slight differences in the way Windows and Photoshop order alphanumeric information.

I have always used YYYY-MM-DD so dates of projects and itterations stay in order. Photo folders as well with a short description after the date.

I use YY/MM/DD as it files in a more usable order.

I have a problem with dates. I started in the early 2000's using a Cannon digital with their ZooBrowser it imported photos in the following format (yyyy_mo_dd). I later switch to Nikon cameras using View NX and NX-i (Nikon Transfer) with same format. I still use that format to organize photos. Current problem with other brand cameras is if I shoot jpeg, it still works...but not for raw. Lightroom, Bridge and other software will not let me import in that format. After so many years, I am not interested in changing my organizational format.

Thanks lamiaceae (and EVERYONE ) for the clarification/meaning of ISO-8601, the “international standard format covering the worldwide exchange and communication if date and time-related data”. Generally used and presented as 2022-08-21. This date format is NOT to be confused with ISO light sensitivity settings we use in photography. Yep, we’re on the right track (using the ISO-8601 date settings).
