This reminds me of the poor ladies who dipped the radium paint brushes into their mouths to paint watch dials so they'd glow in the dark :-( (The Radium Girls - a wonderful historical fiction book: Hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these “shining girls” are the luckiest alive — until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.)
I wonder if the "safe" arsenic wafers caused any such long-term effects. Thanks for the post.

My mother was one of the radium girls. Had to make sure that the paint brush was just the right size to get into the tiny spots on the watch dial. Twirl it in between your lips. Luckily my dad came back from the war and they were to busy, probably making me for her to continue working there. I wonder if that's where I get that special glow the ladies always liked?

Many of the Radium Dial painters died of osteogenic sarcomas - a primary cancer of bones.

I shared this one with my sister. She seemed quite familiar with the product. Scary. Here was her reply.
"I think this was actually a remedy that was used to cure acne at the turn of the last century. Women could easily get arsenic and also used it to poison their husbands. Often it was baked into a nice juicy pie. Thus the play Arsenic and Old Lace."

Poisonous Spackle
This and lead were kinda common the "good ol days".
They would corrode the skin texture, requiring more product.
