My first encounter with a graceful American White Pelican.

Taken at one of the lakes in the Central Oregon Cascade Lakes area. Canon R5, RF 100-500mm lens. Handheld from a boat with both bird and boat in motion. Later, I noticed the lens image stabilization was set to the off position. Assuming that was true at the time photo was taken, only the R5 camera body stabilization was on. I'm happy with the results either way.

Very nice! They are big and bulky, but like wood storks, when they soar, they are amazingly graceful.

Thanks Jack. I was approaching the boat ramp when I saw it. It was in between and close to 3 fishermen in float tubes. After about 20 minutes and a lot of shots slowly following him in my inflatable boat and trying to stay far enough away so it remained comfortable, I must have let the boat drift a little too close. It took flight but only flew a few yards. I figured that was enough and let him be. Capture about 350 shots, mostly good ones.

Thanks for the comments, Earnest. I've missed out on photographing pelicans numerous times and was happy to be at the right place at the right time for once.
