I was tempted to put this in the main photography forum but thought it stood a better chance of survival here. I had my colonoscopy today and am marveling over the speed and efficiency with which I got my report via our patient portal. The procedure started at 2:30 pm and we were home for supper at 4:30 or so including a short trip to the grocery store. While DW made sandwiches (I had to fast in preparation). They provided a pretty detailed description of the trip through my bowels and the good news is... no polyps. Now what the possible heck could this have to do with photography, you say? Part of the procedure description was the camera model that they stuffed up in there. Olympus will be proud to know it was one of theirs. 😉

“via our patient portal.” Yeah, that’s the same place theystuck the camera when I had mine.

At my last colonoscopy, I was all hooked up and could easily see the video screen. I said to the Doctor that it would be great if I could watch some of the procedure. He said “Sure!” Well, he got started, and I said: “Oh, I felt that.” The next thing I remember is waking up in the recovery room!

I am happy to report that I am overage for colonoscopies. But I had my share back in the day.

I only remember seeing one of them in real time. Not the whole procedure but one little snippet of it before I conked out. The camera didn't go in there, it was a fibre optic cable with a lens on the end and some other tools included. The interesting part was the focusing procedure. Apparently the lens was fixed, so they had to adjust the distance between the lens and the field of view. Rather than pull the lens in and out, they just pumped some air in, inflating the colon so the field of view moved to focus the image.

Those were a decade or more ago, so I would be surprised if things had not changed in the interim. They may now have focusing available in situ. It is not a field of study I have followed closely.

Yeah, I'm now closer to eighty than seventy, so he said it would be my last one, which kind of scared me till he clarified and said it was an age thing. I also think they quit on prostate exams around seventy as I haven't had one of those in a few years as well. Two of my favorites... wheee! Now, if they could just figure out a way to make a catheterization a little more comfortable as apparently you gotta' die to get out of them for a sure thing. As regards what part of the camera mechanism goes in there I'll never know. My motto is 'wake me when it's over". I think it said Olympus 190 endoscopy device? I hope he didn't mix up his devices.

I found it refreshing to have three young ladies fondling my genitalia and I did not have to take any of them to dinner.

17 years ago I had to have a Colostomy done and as a result have to wear a pouch on my abdomen... No big deal and sometimes an advantage traveling with no rest stops in sight. Anyhoot, last time I had a colonoscopy of course it was a top down procedure instead of bottom up... With a bunch of smiling nurses standing around Doc asked if I would like to watch as I laid on my back... I said No, I will just take a nap and wait for the warm towels... Maybe it would have been interesting... What do you think ? Should I have gone for it ?

Nowadays most endoscopy centers provide a paper copy of your report, including pertinent findings and some photos, before you leave the center.

The Olympus 190 scope used on niteman3d has a fixed wide angle lens with a minimum focus distance of 4 mm.

The technology in the Olympus 190 series incorporates a "dual focus" ability, for focusing on normal vs. near subjects of interest. The field of view is 170º for normal and 160º for near subjects, with depth of field of 5-100 mm for normal viewing and 2-6 mm for near viewing.

The portion inserted into the patient is a 12.8 mm diameter flexible tube with a lens on the tip, a fiberoptic bundle to transmit light from a xenon lamp located in the video processor unit which is external to the patient, a second fiberoptic bundle to transmit the image back to the "camera" (the CCD contained in the light source box), a 3 mm channel through which to insert instruments (biopsy forceps, snare wires, baskets, injection needles, etc.) and an air/water channel to wash the lens or to add air to inflate the colon.

Interesting name: 'Niteman3d'

Always good to see details on something that happens to a lot of people but that are not important to keep in memory unless you're trained to use one.

The 'niteman3d' came from one of my jobs during the last twenty five years of my work life... I was the night manger at several local hotels which allowed me to while away many a late night hour on the various bulletin boards and usenet groups of the early days of the internet. It also helped me supplement the income from my various daytime enterprises so that I could afford computers and cameras.

@dancers... I've had probably eight colonoscopy or endoscopy procedures from this guy over the years and when I first went there they gave you a voucher for a free meal at a nice local restaurant. Over the years it has diminished. Yesterday netted me a coupon for ten or fifteen percent discount at one of several chains... inflation.

The prep really sucks - I woke up at the "tail-end," no pun intended, of one and resolved never to have it done by that doctor again

The results of my last colonoscopy came back great! And my EX-wife was right, I'm a perfect A**hole.
God bless her.
