I saw a video that said that focus speed is slowed considerably when using iso auto in manual mode but that it may depend on the camera. I have a nikon d800. I was thinking of using this with my Tamron 150-600 to take bird photos. Has anybody experienced this problem with similar equipment. I can test it out once my lens comes back from the doctor but I wanted to be sure that my problem was due to the iso auto and not anything the doctor "fixed".

auto iso wouldn't make anything slow down.

Can you give a link to that video please?

Have used a D800 often in auto ISO for years and never had any indication that it slowed AF. It's just another camera computer operation such as automatically adjusting speed or aperture to get its suggested exposure.

The issue is whether you can also use Exposure Compensation with AUTO ISO and Manual Exposure. It does ZERO good to have the camera peg the exposure to the 0-mark, something older DSLRs were limited to doing in AUTO ISO and Manual Exposure. The D800 may / may not be old enough to be hobbled by this limitation.

It should allow to use EC with auto ISO and manual exposure mode. My Nikon Df does and it's only slightly newer than the D800. It's older than the D810.

For the D800 EC is available in that mode with the range of +/- 5 on the ISO

I shoot in manual auto ISO with the D500 and use EC quite often.

I'm a big fan of the practice.

Does EC work if you just shot Raw or do you have to use jpg? I have the D500 but haven't played around with the EC yet.

The camera can or cannot, the file format should have no relevance.

Could this be the video suggesting processing power the culprit specific to 'that' camera?

I always shoot in Manual and often in Auto ISO. Never noticed any difference.
