"PASSED" Sticker

Most expensive items from Japanese companies seem to have that little gold "PASSED" sticker on them. Why leave it on? It's like leaving that "Illegal to remove..." tag on mattresses. I see fifty-year-old cameras on eBay with that sticker still in place. Nothing I bought still has that sticker on it. I know - you're going to tell me that it will be difficult to sell those things without that sticker.

"But where's that little gold sticker?! Didn't this pass?!"

I remove that sticker as soon as I get the item.
I think it's supposed to make one feel good...

(Do that make "Failed" stickers for those that don't???)

That would be funny - a red "FAILED" sticker. "Sale on FAILED cameras!"

As you all know "Passed" just means it met minimum standards. Like I "passed" college physics but you don't want me working on anything! Thanks for the post Jerry, got a good chuckle this morning.

A good chuckle a day keeps the doctor away.

It is like the hologram on the bill of some baseball caps, some people keep them on.

I have some vintage cameras that has some of that sticker’s glue residue on the top plate or prism housing. It’s very difficult to remove if the sticker stayed on any length of time or was left out in the sun for any time.

They stopped putting the JCII (Japan Camera Industry Institute) stickers on cameras in the 80s. So, if you have any gear with a sticker on it's older than some of our Congress people.

It's not just Pass or gold star. In 1954 I bought a Steif tiger toy in Frankfurt and as soon as I unpacked it, I removed the ear tag. I still have it and you would not believe the price I could get for this little thing now if it still had the tag!

The PASSED sticker is the JCII passed sticker which is on only camera related equipment and not expensive equipment. JCII is Japan Camera Industry Institute. They stopped using them sometime in the 80's because at that time the Made in Japan alone speaks well enough for the quality.

I think "...older than some of our Congress people" would require a chisel and hammer.
