Ordered z9 in February, forgot about it and it came from B&H yesterday. One should be able to walk into any camera store and buy a z9 off the shelf, Never had this problem before.

There have been a lot of supply chain problems making it difficult for camera companies to keep up with demand. The 6 months you waited for your Z-9 is not out of line these days.
I think they are pretty well caught up now. I ordered mine on Saturday. My friend ordered one on Monday. We both got ours on Wednesday. We just happened to have ordered at the right time.

I ordered my Z9 on 18 Novermber 2021 and it took 8 months but was very happy when it arrived. A great camera!

It's virtually handmade, and there is considerable demand. Nikon sent a notice about pausing construction of a flash, maybe?, because of supply problems. If they don't have the parts, they can't make the products.
Still waiting for mine............
Pre-ordered mine from Houston Camera Exchange the day it was announced. It took 15 1/2 weeks to come in, but it was well worth the wait. My birding keeper rate is way up. Nikon is notorious for underestimating demand. The same thing happened with the D850. What’s really frustrating is how long it’s taking them to roll out Z glass including things like teleconverters and reasonably priced telephotos. Still waiting for the announcement for the 200 - 600mm. The good news is that I can use f mount glass until the new stuff is available.

The reviews seem to like Z glass, but, of course, each lens is different.
There have been worldwide chip shortages, and supply chain shortages of parts and workers. Try getting the latest new car from a dealer. Every camera maker is facing the same problems supplying the latest, in-demand gear for hundreds or thousands of orders.
But no maker wants to be left out by NOT releasing their best and risking consumer defection to another competitor. Most experts say we will be out of this chip shortage by middle of next year, but no one really knows.
What I do know is that after you have had and used your fine new toy for awhile, you will forget the length of the wait you had to acquire it.
Cheers ,be happy and keep snapping.

Yes, Z9 delays are really long. Took me a year to get my Olympus 150-400.
It's a combination of supply chain delays, and I think an underestimation of demand. Nikon made an awesome technology leap with the Z9, and the demand is much greater than predicted.
