Due to the responses to a current Jaguar XKE post indicating that like me, quite a few Hoggers owned one at one time.
As such I thought I would show you some pics of a Jaguar that could have been, but ultimately wasn't. It's really a shame as this car looked as if they had never stopped making the E-type and it had evolved over the years.
It was the year 2000 when Jaguar showed up at the Detroit Auto Show with a concept car that was called the F-type. It was absolutely gorgeous and stole the show.
The response was so positive that Ford, who owned Jaguar at the time, announced it would be put into production for the 2005 model year. About a year later they said, "uh no, we're not gonna do it." I was crushed.
Not long after that Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Indian car maker Tata Motors, who later announced they would be making an F-type. While a nice car, the one they produced looked nothing like the concept car from the 2000 show as you will see below.
Please note, these are not my photos...they were gathered from the web and I have no attributions.

The Mustang Concept car
Ruined the 1964 1/2 production car for me, I couldn't stand the early Mustangs until the fastbacks came out.
Agreed I prefer The Fastback it looks more together.
Failing to produce this car was an absolute crime.
It would be interesting to see how the convertible top fit - looks tricky. Also, the rear view mirrors are oddly located and don’t look functional. It’s similar to my XK8 with a few glitzy mods. The actual F-Type is a blast to drive and the Project 7 version with 575hp is exceptional. Unfortunately, their sedans and SUVs haven’t sold well so the company is in trouble, only buoyed up by the success of Land Rover. I’ve owned an XF and it’s a fabulous driver’s car but styling is meh.
I really must live under a rock of great size. I have never heard of Tata Motors.

Loc: on the edge of the Colorado front range
The auto industry is littered with beautiful cars that never happened. Often judged too extreme for their time, they are treasures.
Before the age of computers, automobile designers were more like jewelry makers in the ways that they produced prototypes. Each was hand-crafted in elegant detail. Computer design software has changed the automobile industry for the future.
I'd rather have nice camera gear and a pickup truck.
Sad, the Tata version looks pretty much like a knockoff of the current Mustang design.
