1996 trip to Berlin. Weather nice, warm and mostly dry. Neither my wife nor I had been there before and were reallly interested in wandering the city including a bus ride into the former Russian Sector. Noticeably shabbier than the western part. Fantastic Museums, many on an island in middle of city. On one of our buses to another section of Berlin we passed a large city park with hundreds of sun bathers ( in various degrees of nudity..including total). I was surprised as it was totally unexpected. I know Germany is not known for warm sunny summers and they have a tendency to acquire properties in the south of Spain, France and Italy to compensate, but this was kind of extreme! My first year in Germany (1954) was cold, cloudy and we said often that summer didn't exist here.

1996: Munich (Munchen), Germany: Capital and most populous city in Bavaria. Noted for Octoberfest: 1100 bars, 200 beer gardens. City has world's largest hot spa, a piece of the Berlin Wall, surfing on a portion of the Eisbach River and an English Garden Nude Park in the center of it all.
Remember what I said above about sun worshippers!

Kurforstendamm: Entrance to West Berlin's legendary Shopping Boulevard.


Berlin Zoo: Entrance Gate. Home to largest variety of species in the world. Restored after reunification.


Pergamon Museum: Pergamon Altar -originally built on the Acropolis of Pergamon in Asia Minor during reighn of ancient Greek King Eumenes II in first half of 2nd Century BC.

Egyptian Museum: Bust of Nefertiti- located in specially designed gallery for this one piece. Thought to have been created +/- 1345 BC by sculptor Thutmose, found in his workshop in Amarna, Egypt.


Egyptian Museum: Bust of Akhenaten, Pharaoh husband of Nefertiti. First leader to create religion featuring one God; the sun (Aten), and building a new city for his capital: Tel Amarna .


Pergamon Museum: Gate from Nimrod.


Pergamon Museum; The Ishtar Gate. Constructed circa 575 BC; Eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on north side of city. Excavated by Germans 1904- 1914. Only smaller part of main gate is displayed here.


Glyptothek -State Antiquities Museum, Munich: The Barbarini Faun (212 BC) from the Palazzo Barbarini. Marble copy of original Hellenic statue sculpted in Rome by Edme Bouchardon in 1726.

I was with the Army in Berlin from Feb.1961 until Aug.1963.West Berlin was in the process of being rebuilt and was a beautiful city for the most part especially the Kudamm. The east sector still looked like the war days. Russia did very little to restore their sector..We returned for military reunions in 1998, 2006 and 2010.I love Berlin and wish that some of the folks wanting to change the US could visit cities like East Berlin after the war and see how the people suffered.BTW your photos bring back so many memories. Thank you.
