Lightroom file question

I used to use Lightroom up thru Lightroom 6 and stopped when it became subscription only. I was helping a friend of mine with some of his shots and he is using Lightroom Classic. In looking in his photo's folder I noticed there isn't any sidecar files with the edit data for the pictures.

Do they now stire the data in the Lightroom catelog or if they still use the sidecar fikes, do they now keep them somewhere other than in the photo's folders?

All edit information is in the LR catalog. Always. You can also externalize this data into the sidecar files. To be useful, the sidecar files have to be in the same folder and filename (different XMP extension) as the original image file. Creating XMP files is a LR setting that must be purposefully set by the human.

It is YOUR CHOICE whether to add sidecar files or not. Yes, the data is in the catalog (really, it's a database...). Sidecar files are useful if you want to open the raw data in Photoshop.

The catalog has the edit information and history. If you turn on sidecar files, they will have the latest edit information. I've moved LR raw images to other tools and most of the edits (if not all) come across.

I turn on auto saving the information to the sidecar files. This also kind of acts as a backup to your catalog file. Otherwise you need to select the image(s) and choose "save" to write the sidecar. JPEGs write into the files actual metadata with no sidecar. Not sure how DNGs work.
