I live a few miles from a horse arena in AZ. They have horse cutting competitions from time to time. Here's a few from one of my visits.
Some good action shots Tom.

Great set of images!!
Can't say much for the horsemanship, "Grabbing leather" used to get you disqualified.
Which is why I could never enter cutting comps.
Very nice photos. I love rodeo and cowboy shots. Keep up the good work.
I am curious as to what equipment you used to take these shots.
Very good action captures, Tom.

Thanks, Doug. I use a Nikon D800 and am still happy with results. Camera is getting long in the tooth but I don't have very many images on it for an 11 year old camera. Numbers 1 and 2 were shot with a Nikkor 80-200 2.8AFS lens. Exposure was 1/800th, 2.8, ISO 3200. I try not to use too high an ISO with the D800. Gets kind of noisy. If I do upgrade the camera, this would be one of the main reasons to do so. Numbers 3 and 4 were shot with a manual focus Nikkor 300 2.8, both at ISO 3200, 1/800th, #3 shutter speed 1/1000th, #4 1/800th. I don't use that lens much anymore. Still love the images it produces but it's hard for me to handhold now that I'm 77. Also, I've gotten used to autofocus. I acquired the lens in 1985 and it's in marvelous condition. Hard for me to part with it. (But will for the right price.)
Great set of Cutting Horses!
