The statement below matches the info given to us back in 1962. It was then also the mention of the finger pressure in regards to placement of the letters.

From Google search:

"Why the QWERTY keyboard layout was developed?

The prime reason why QWERTY keyboard was invented was to minimize typewriter jamming by placing the most commonly used characters farther away from each other. This clearly led to fewer jams and thus, faster typing. Interestingly, this layout was named QWERTY because of the first 6 letters that appear on the keyboard."

We will not mention anything as to key-punch machines. Too many floating placement of the keys. (I am sticking to that story!)

When you hit a key on a typewriter, a metal arm swings up and hits the platen. If the keyboard wasn't arranged with offset letters, every one of those metal arms would have to have a specific bend to avoid hitting the others. Shifting the keys to one side lets the typewriter use the same shape for each arm - much simpler for the manufacturer. With the move to computers, the manufacturers weren't about to make typists relearn typing.

Funny thing. Right after I read this, I started watching some youtube video, and one of my favorite channels just posted a video which deal with just that question. (Well, that question and a few other -- it's answered about 8 minutes in)

The correcting feature of typewriters is not what I thought

My typing is much neater than my handwriting, so I type as much as I can.

If your typewriting wasn't neat, you would either have a broken typewriter or some seriously fumble-fingers!

You missed a trick.

Our band folks were always the fastest, because we would type in tempo.

When we started typing drum cadences, our teacher went nuts!

Thanks for the memory!

My typing classmates weren’t musicians but we pulled a similar stunt. One or two kids would start hitting two keys in rhythm and the rest of the class would gradually pick it up until the whole class was doing it. A couple of us decided to dress it up one day and started singing “Les Marseillaise” which we’d learned in French class, with the rhythmic typing in the background. Even the teacher got a kick out of that. He let us get it out of our system under threat of detention. I ran into him at a reunion many years later and he told me that was one of the best stunts a class had ever pulled on him…he actually wanted to join in the singing😳
