Should be a warning somewhere: Don't fart while smoking!
What’s worse is when you produce smoke when farting.
Fires and explosions from natural gas and boilers were a far too common occurrence at the turn of the century and up and through this period. The industry was still finding its way and the move to oil and natural gas getting away from the use of coal (which required labor to keep the stokers full and to clean clunkers) created a perfect storm of opportunities for those unfamiliar with the hazards of installations and operations of the "new systems".
One of the significant causes of explosions and fires was that pilot lights were "standing" flames, and when they went out, there were no safety devices to shut the gas flow off. Steam boilers would run dry or build up too much pressure, destroying entire buildings. Then there were poor methods or applications of pipe fitting as the quality of the installers tooling and thread sealing would vary widely. Despite the number of times and ways man has tried to eliminate their species, we continue to cheat death.

Up till that time, there was no unpleasant smell added to natural gas.
That smell is a safety feature so that leaks are detectable before something blows up.

Right. It's too bad they didn't think of that in 1933.

30 years in a gas utility emergency response. It's Non toxic!! Suffocation is a different story as ANY gas at 100 percent is dangerous. Do you know the difference between toxic and suffocation. One is poison and the other is not.

Isn't it Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)?

Toxic means poisonous. CO2 is non toxic, but when the room fills up with it you suffocate. As is with water. Neither is consider toxic

Quite right, too many things going on.
And there’s a difference between toxic and deadly. Toxic, such as arsenic may only made you sick. Deadly, as in water is what happens when I stop drinking it and start swimming in it. I can drink safely but I can’t swim.

Shocking story jerry. Similar consequences (though not as many deaths) at the "Grenfell tower block" fire in london a few years back. 72 people died when a fire broke out, and the flames crept up the building because the outside cladding wasnt fire proofed, no blame was apportioned, it just turned out it was cheaper to do it that way!

Yes, I saw a video about that.
