Florida family drives into electric car problem: a replacement battery costs more than vehicle itself

A family in Florida drove into a major problem after buying a used electric vehicle: the replacement battery for their dead car wound up costing more than the used car was purchased for.

Avery Siwinski is a 17-year-old whose parents spent $11,000 on a used Ford Focus Electric car, which is a 2014 model and had about 60,000 miles when it was bought, according to KVUE.

The teenager had the car for six months before it began giving her issues and the dashboard was flashing symbols.

"It was fine at first," Siwinski said. "I loved it so much. It was small and quiet and cute. And all the sudden it stopped working."

She told the news outlet that the car stopped running after taking it to a repair shop, and the family eventually found out that the car's battery would need to be replaced.

The problem? A battery for the electric car costs $14,000, according to the news outlet.

Siwinski's grandfather stepped in to help out with the car problems because her father passed away in June due to colon cancer.

The Ford dealership had advised us that we could replace the battery," said her grandfather, Ray Siwinski. "It would only cost $14,000."

However, the family found out that there weren't any batteries of that type available anymore because the Ford model is discontinued.

The infrastructure required for supporting and serving the use of the e-car does not exist now or in the foreseeable future. We have here an example of "The emperor has no clothes." None of the parties promoting the e-car discuss this continuing shortage of infrastructure, much less an end to the shortage. Hence, we receive hoopla on the subject instead of an informative description of the practicality of the e-car.

The e-car industry is very young. Once certain standards are set it will mature and become far more practical and viable. E-cars need a standard battery design that will allow competition in the marketplace so that replacement batteries become more affordable. The confounding element is that sometimes form factors override functionality, so “custom” designs create unique products and the consumer is left in a bind. The situation will not be as simple as today’s AA or AAA batteries (even 12 volt car batteries come in various sizes) but I believe it will get better.

I'm reminded of the Tesla owner in Finland who blew is vehicle up with dynamite because of the high cost of a replacement battery ($22,000) and other problems he had with the vehicle.

I would suspect that we heard similar stories when the first gasoline powered. Auto appeared.. no station to pump fuel

Dumb argument against progress

Tell camera makers to all standardize on the same battery.

What's your point ?
there were no battery re-charging stations either .
But it was a lot cheaper to take an extra fuel tank with you than a dozen heavy batteries .

PS:
Actually, more Electric cars were used long before gasoline powered vehicles .
So "progress" was actually the switch to gasoline powered vehicles .

Around the turn of the 19 th Century :
40% of American cars were steam powered
38% were battery powered and only
22% had gasoline engines

Fuel was available everywhere according to your proof.
Not modern stations that you use but drug stores everywhere.

I fully expect there will be shops that special in repairing and replacing car batteries, in time, much as there are t***smission shops and generator shops, and tire shops. If this happens It will probably affect the price of new batteries as well. There will probably be aftermarket manufacturers of new batteries for the more popular models. I know I have never bought a phone battery from a phone manufacturer, and I have never bought a camera battery from a camera manufacturer. You can have fork lift batteries repaired. New they are $4,000 and up. Repairs are much cheaper, They have wet cells and have to be taken out of the case which is full of sulfuric acid. electric car batteries are made of individual fully encapsulated consumer lithium cells. This won't happen till there are more electric cars on the road. An electric care manufacturer has an interest in keeping battery prices high, first it makes for more profit, second it helps people to consider buying a new car. An independent battery manufacturer will still want profits, but they won't care about selling a new car.

Some places an automobile had to have someone walking with a warning sign when it was in motion on a public road. If I had a link for you I would post it, but I'm not going to look it up for you.

Too bad it didn't burst into flames! At least then there would be some sort of insurance payout.

Personally, I am content to leave these to the millionaires and billionaires because they can afford it.
