Iron Harvest

I don't know why I had never heard about this. When farmers in France plow their fields in the spring, they discover about ninety tons of unexploded munitions from WW I. The cases are rusty and falling apart, but the explosives have killed hundreds of people over the years as these weapons have been discovered and disposed of.

In doing a search for this on YouTube, I discovered that there is a game of the same name. Of course, there is.

That's strange. Is it coming from Europe?

When we were in England years ago, we were near the shore and saw a sign warning of an unexploded bomb.

Mines are still a threat in the oceans as they are in former land combat areas. The number of land mines deployed is staggering and remains to claim their victims.

Saturation (carpet) bombing has been continued since WWII until now.

Part of the island was a test range in the 40's. Most of that stuff is WWII era US stuff.

Some parts of the east coast have unexploded shells from old Civil War coastal forts which were often just earth and sand rampart construction.

There is a munitions ship the 'SS Richard Montgomery' which sank in a sand bank in the Thames estuary in England in 1944. Its masts are still sticking out of the water, it is a time bomb waiting to go off...look it up on Google.

Yes, and that's a major problem. Would you volunteer to remove the munitions? Maybe prisoners would volunteer for early release.

I can't believe they have left it that long. A documentary I watched recently suggested it could trigger a small tsunami along the coast...and no I wouldn't volunteer!

Yes, it's a real mess. Time isn't on their side. They can't even blow it up because of the damage it will cause. Ignoring problems seems to be standard operating procedure for governments around the world. We have bridges collapsing here because they can't be repaired for free.

I think I'd invest in a metal detector and check my field out before plowing.

Be very careful. I understand that certain detectors can even set off the mine. { BOOM!! }
