Charlie, I thought I would have some fun working with your image with simple tools available in IrfanView. I got rid of noise with a "Blur" and "Median filter," increased the contrast, and "sharpened" the final image and at a few points in between. I kept it a bit larger than most of the other trials if that is important to you.

I loved the photo. Thanks for the fun. --Richard

Thanks Richard. I appreciate the comment as well as the edit of the photo.

Yesterday we went to Lake Tobias North of Harrisburg, PA.

As usual I took a bunch of photos and they looked pretty good on my camera monitor...

When I got home and was starting my edits about half way through the images I enlarged one to get a better look...wow there was a lot of noise in the photo...what the heck...then i noticed that the ISO was set to 10000...Yes I had been playing with the camera a while back and forgot to reset the ISO

I have heard a lot of good about Topaz denoise and sharpen...I have even downloaded the trial and found I was not very proficient at using the product...before I buy the package I would love some help from UHH to see what can be done with the photos I took yesterday...I have attached one here...any editing to this photo is welcome...

Done with ON1 No Noise. Hope this is OK!
Admin, I apologize if this does not belong in this topic...

This has very minor changes (slight increase in contrast and microcontrast, exposure -.97, slight deepening of Blacks) done in DxO. In addition, I turned off DxO's Noise Reduction.

Thanks Shoe. I don’t believe I will be using DxO. Your exit looks good.

How much of this is noise and how much of it is artifacts/loss contrast from shooting through glass/plastic/screen door?

I shot Thru a steel mesh screen that are maybe 6” square. It was not Thru a mesh

I hate fluctuating ISO. I set mine to the camera's lowest setting and lock it there. If I want to raise it, I can. I've been playing around with my Z fc, and when it's on Auto, it doesn't mind going up to 12,500 ISO. I still get good pictures, but naturally, there's noise, especially when I zoom in.

I usually keep mine locked on something below 1000. I had been playing with high iso and just forgot to lower it to something more acceptable.

I wasn't trying to proselytize. Rather, I listed the adjustments I made that were simple ones that can be made with almost any photo processing s/w.

As you should know, I could have done it with less sharpening, but that's the way I like it - not the dull, foggy version!!! I do understand that some prefer it that way, but not I. I have seen that view expressed here a number of times previously by others, but I prefer sharp, vivid pictures unless blur and fogginess are called for by the nature of the shot, or that which the photographer wishes to convey.

It’s not just the over sharpening. The colors are garish and you also sharpened and increased contrast in the background and totally destroyed what little DOF separation that was in the original.

Now that I’ve seen results from two people using ON1 I’m happy I haven’t invested in it.
