I have had a Canon EOS Rebel T5 for 5 or 6 years and have over 10,000 clicks. I have been very satisfied with the camera, won more than my share of awards, but want to prepare for the next step.
If I look in the $1000 range what should I consider? Can I get a decent upgrade for that amount?
Looking for your words of wisdom.
Thanks

Since i went to SONY mirrorless I don't use my Canon 7Dii much. Now Canon has mirrorless bodies, I woulda snatched one of those if available back when. I'd advise you to check them out they have a LOT to offer. They also have an adapter for your Canon EOS lenses! Slick sideways move.

What lenses do you have already? What do you shoot?

Do you have to spend that entire amount? Do you want to spend that entire amount?

Your camera is a rather basic model with an 18MP sensor. You can increase the pixel resolution and overall complexity and capability of the camera looking at an EOS 80D, to 24MP and maintaining compatibility with all your current lenses. This model might now be discontinued, so a lightly used model will save money, saving money possibly for another lens or just saving in general. The final Rebel model, the EOS T8i also is a more-advanced model, again maintaining lens compatibility at 24MP.

The new mirrorless EOS R10 is the logical mirrorless jump, also 24MP with a number of features of a mirrorless body. Again, your lenses remain fully compatibly via EF/EF-S to RF adapter.

A few more details about your current situation might help generate more candidate ideas.

The best Canon APS-C DSLR is the 32 mega-pixel (MP) 90D, which is just over your budget at $1199. I love my 24 MP 80D, its predecessor. If you use B&H's Payboo credit card, they pay the sales tax.

As the other Paul said, the T8i is the latest T series 24 MP APS-C camera which is within your budget.

The SL3 is a lesser and smaller APS-C body. You can read about it here:
https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/uk/news/should-you-buy-a-canon-eos-rebel-sl3-in-2022?utm_source=SmartBrief&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=75AC6D4F-39F0-41CB-A47C-7C5D939AC64B&utm_content=43C2C470-8549-4B31-910F-57D4CB52EE01&utm_term=d1539057-26cc-48ac-94c1-46b249136c8f

All above can use the EF-S mount lenses without penalty, as well as EF lenses.
You can compare all 3 DSLRs here:
