It also comes with a wrist strap as shown, I use it instead of the neck strap. I found it at Amazon.

No, Df doesn't have a built in grip nor grip at all. The cover you saw is the battery and memory card compartment cover at the bottom!

I was looking at the picture shown in a previous post in this article. Facing the camera, it appears to have a bump out on the left side if the camera, which I believe is intended for gripping purposes. I understand that there is no grip attached to the bottom of the camera in this picture.

Yes, I see what you meant, it's the hand grip, and in there is the battery compartment. The leather covers over it that makes me to hold the camera steadily and comfortably.
