Looking for suggestions for good/inexpensive (or is that an oxymoron) extension tubes/kit for Nikon d3100. Camera store is pushing Phottix, but I trust the forum more.

It may also be important to you in getting a set that maintains automation such as AF and AE. Some do not. The Kenkos do, when matched to an AE/AF lens-- they are around $200.00 USD

Plain extension tubes are cheap, as they are basically an aluminum tube with camera mounts on each end. Manual focus & manual aperture.

Auto-extension tubes have electronic connections that allow camera to communicate with lens, preserving auto-focus and auto-aperture.
I find both quite useful in field macro-photography.

I purchased on eBay, a set of Kenko auto-tubes (12-mm, 20-mm, & 36-mm). they are made as well as Nikon or Canon tubes, and much better than Chinese knock-off copies.

Tanks to all for the advise. Plan to pick up a set at local store (on sale with a 30 day return policy) so I can return them if not pleased. I'll let you know.

Kenko is good quality! Chinese copies are garbage!!!
AF pins, loosen up inside and may damage the camera or the lenses!
I've had a bummer
Fortunately I managed to withdraw without camera or lenses damaged!

I have had the opportunity to try both the cheap 15 dollar set and a 125 dollar set. I would go with the 125 if I was set on tubes but I think I would go with a cheaper 1:1 lens and by pass the tubes.

I use D3100 with 50mm f/1.8g and extension tubes i picked up on ebay for £10.00. You can easily get results like the pics shown which was some of the first i took after getting the tubes (a few months ago). Use of flash is recommended though, unless it is very bright. You do lose autofocus and aperture settings so it all has to be done in manual mode. If i were to get auto tubes, it would be Kenko ones.

Many couple the tubes with a Macro lens to go greater than 1:1.

Well Ibelieve that when I read use a light a bulb went off! I asked for one for Christmas this year, I don't have one so did not use my on board! Since it was not in the bag I guess I just plain didn't think of it. I was in the bright sunshine that we have not seen for some time now. But if I were to choose I liked the auto a bit better so I could change apeture settings.
