Kenny Everett - UK DJ

Some of older folks from England might know the name "Kenny Everett" from 1970s radio. I had never heard of him, but apparently, he stood out as a DJ - way ahead of his time. I also learned what "carts" are. They look like 8-track tapes, but they work differently - and better.

Yes, his TV show was funny jerry, with many madcap moments. Some of his 'material' was very near the knuckle...such as his 'Cupid Stunt and Sid Snot' characters! It is said that he pushed 'Queens' first record 'Bohemian Rhapsody' into the charts, the lead singer of Queen...Freddie Mercury who was his friend wasn't sure if it was good enough! He and Freddie both died of AIDS.

Fantastic show - Hot Gossip (his dance troupe) where as near to the knuckle as you get at the time, but some of the sketches were plain comedy, the PUNK in the loo bursting for a pee but can't find the right zip on his outfit is one I always remember.

Yes., I remember listening to him for a few moments a day while commuting to work in D.C. He was gross to put it mildly. However, preferred Hardin and Weaver for many years before switching to WGAY for some easy music; until that station change format.

"carts" is short for cartridges. As a DJ back in the early 60s I started on my first radio station with Magnecorders, reel-to-reel recorders. Then we switched to "cart" machines. "carts" referring to cartridge tape machines.

Well Dave, now you have dug into this old farts memory bank.

In the world of audio, long before the cassette or the 8 track. there was a product called the 'Fidelipac'.
It was the first endless loop cartridge and it had had many uses. From short commercial clips to a full song or two.

In the early 60s it was picked up by the auto stereo industry and became known as the '4 Track Cartridge'.
I worked in that world for almost 20 years. One of the many places I worked was in the engineering lab at Muntz.

'Fidelipac'

'Stereo-Pak'

Yes I remember listening to Kenny on the radio and watching him on television. He is sadly missed and there never was another liked him.

Our station still has some carts, and a cart player (for the Smithsonian I suppose). It is now all on the computer. During the break, you simply click and the commercials, PSAs. etc. plays, then stops when it is finished. Slick.

How well I remember. Racks of these and they were all my children.
All hell would break loose when one failed 15 seconds before air time.
