So... I wuz' bored for a few moments and grabbed my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and my 18-200 AF VR Nikkor (Ver 1) and went outside for a side-by-side comparo...

The Nikkor lens was set as close to 30mm as possible (kinduv' a guess), set at F/8, and the Sigma also F/8, ISO stuck at 400 for both... D5200 body.
Very different in exposure and look... certainly not very Scientific here, but it Was fun to check out!

Oh, also, that 18-200 habitually overexposes - I Did NOT compensate here.....

PICS to follow!! SOOC JPEGs

Overexposes = letting in more light, which in turn means it's more efficient as far as light transmission is concerned. It's hard to compare the two images because of the different light levels, but the Sigma image looks as though it might be a bit more contrasty and might have less in the way of light bleed. One reason for that could be a more generous use of lens coatings, which would explain the lower transmission efficiency.

Bokeh on the Sigma is a little sharper and distracting. Nikon is smoother and much less noticeable.

An awesome observation here, R.G.! Stuff I never thought about... Thank you!

When that 18-200 is on any of my Nikon bodies (D5200, D7000, D7100), I dial in -0.7 compensation or just shoot RAW and work it out!

Yeah! I also noted that - actually the opposite of what I thought would happen... Ha!

Thank you, SonyA580!!
