Thanks to all who have responded; especially those with favorable comments. These keep me motivated in culling through many of the old photos.

I spent 1954 and 1955 as guest of Uncle Sam in Germany. We all agreed that there was no summer there in 1954...some miserable weather in that part of the country. However, our posting and job allowed for a fair amount of free time with the permission to wear civvies instead of uniform. Some of us took great advantage of travel opportunities...a few never left the base!
What you see here are places that were either within a quick ride or two day trips.

Fohren-Linden translates to Pine and basswood, plentiful in the area. Located near the border with the Saarland. The settlement was established about 960 AD.

Lorelie Rock is a slate rock, about 433' high on the right bank and a rather sharp turn of the Rhine River. Many shipwrecks occurred there and a legend of sirens luring sailors to crash on the rock developed.

Roman Baths are early 4th century AD built during the reign of Constantine but never completed.

The Porta Nigra (Black Gate) Built of gray sandstone in 170 AD. Ruined and rebuilt by Napoleon.

Lichtenburg is the largest castle ruin in Germany. Built in 1200 AD. A major fire in 1799 destroyed the building.

Garmish recreation area, located in southern Germany (Bavaria) was taken over by US Government after WW2 .
The Zugspitz mountain is 9718 feet above sea level and is the highest peak of the Witterstein Mountains and the highest peak in Germany. The cross was erected in 1851.

I hope you enjoy this little tour of place and time. Please feel free to use your mouse to enlarge photos.
Thanks for looking.

Thanks for sharing these views from long ago. My father was stationed in Wiesbaden after the war and I was born there as a result. He took advantage of the opportunity while there and bought a Rolleiflex automat 6x6, top gear for the time. Memories of him with that camera taking family shots are still with me.

Your post brought back some fine old memories. I was also a guest of the the US Army in Germany, 1957-1960.
