Chuck, pronunciation aside, this might put things into perspective for many.

For me, a great link Bob. When I got into photography in the early 60's nobody never mentioned bokeh, obviously it was there but did not seem important until some time later. I think it was maybe 12 or so years ago when I was in Samy's Camera in Santa Barbara with my friend and mentor when the store manager brought up the bokeh of a lens my friend was buying. I had to ask him what they were talking about. When he explained it to me of course I knew but had never paid any attention to it. It did not matter. It still doesn't matter although I do try to use depth of field effectively, the bokeh, specifically, does not matter.

So what was it called before "bokeh" came along?
Seems like a convenient single word descriptor to me.

I think before the term can to light it was just described as the 'rendering' of the lens, or just the look of the images. Neither refer specifically the out of focus portions, but still often considered when looking at the results a lens gives.

I have never heard this word spoken, always written. I always say it is my head as bouquet like in a bouquet of flowers. Is this correct?

Chuck

Google says bow-kay (emphasis on the first syllable). There are YouTube videos (of course) on the correct pronunciation. I’ve heard the pronunciation of the KEH part with a short e.

IOW, good practice is to never speak the word. Even better would be to just delete it from your mind. The word is almost never properly used so its useless. It has nothing to do with visibly OOF blobs in fuzzy backgrounds.

Freshly ground Pepper is almost never properly used. If you try to delete it from MY world you will be in for a fight!
It's all about how those OOF blobs appear in the frame!!

Well, Wikipedia says BOH-kə and Dictionary.com says boh-kuh.... Both very close.
I'd go with them more than Giggle......

LOL, I concur.

Like saying depth of field is over-rated, or even B&W photos are over-rated, or anything is over-rated.

A photo with exquisite Bokeh, is exquisite. The ability to capture it nicely and consistently is a talent especially when added to a property framed and captured subject. Post production, like short depth of field, doesn't really compare to in camera captures.

And I was corrected by a professor of photography at Syracuse University and long time professional photographer that I pronounced it wrong- it is indeed correct is as you said, maybe ending with a silent Y or an H sound: ( which I find awkward)

I found this online
"The English word ‘bokeh’ comes from a mixture of two Japanese words (boke and boke-aji) which, roughly translated, refers to: ‘the visual appeal of the out-of-focus areas of a photograph.’ It was first used in the American magazine PHOTO Technique in 1997, which defined the spelling ‘bokeh’ to help readers pronounce it correctly (‘bo-’ as in bone and ‘-keh’ as in Kenneth)."

And this hilarious YouTube video on this very subject - as we are not alone in the search for the correct pronunciation....including across the Japanese island!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0Brf2l8Ysc

And this one has a bunch pf photographic pronunciations (I S O is a word, not pronounced as letters) and it ends with bokeh... I think better described than other places.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiS6LJ60kzQ
LOL, I concur. br br Like saying depth of field ... (show quote)

I concur about 90%. ISO is not a word. I.S.O. means International Standards Organization and is pronounced I-S-O
not Eyesoo!

If you are talking with some people in another country and they start using the word Bokeh...you are in a nerd circle.

Shuffle off to somewhere more normal.

Yes, but best to keep the nerdiness local.

We don't want foreign nerds here...and neither do they.

Why not? What's the difference in "foreign" nerds?
A nerd is a nerd, doesn't matter what location or language.

I was a nerd before the term was coined......
