Using my D500 with a Micro Nikkor 105mm f/4 MF lens mounted on a tripod. Paper wasps are not aggressive unless you get too close.

Nice shot - how close were you?
I hated to do it, but had to spray a nest of these that the wasps built in my entry alcove about three feet from my front door.

I was less than 2 feet away. They kept an eye on me, but didn't even buzz me.

That is a cool picture! I would be a bit nervous with a macro lens, to be honest.
