I got bit by a garter snake. That's something I'll never forget. When someone says it's "harmless", don't believe it! Even though it won't kill you and doesn't have a venomous bite, it can still bite, and it fricken hurts!

Snakes get a bad rap for human stupidity.
Would you go up to a rabid dog and pet it?
Would you play with a bear cub?
Would you climb a rock jetty in a hurricane?
The answer is obviously NO!
We should respect other creatures and other circumstances we are not familiar with.
I love snakes regardless of the species. My favorite is a green tree boa. It climbs up a tree and wraps itself around a branch into a little ball. While it is not poisonous it will constrict its prey such as a small bird.
Garter snakes do the same usually preying on small rodents and in captivity on goldfish.
It is important to respect ALL creatures and ALL circumstances which we are not familiar.

All true. When I was a kid, we would catch Gardner snakes and wrap them around our necks just like snake charmers, they never bit us and are not slimy like worms, but silky smooth. Snakes generally get a bad rap.
