I recently acquired a Nikon D800 and see that it isn’t compatible with the ML3 infrared remote. Any suggestions or experiences on different brands or styles of remotes? I don’t use a remote very often but they are invaluable when you do need one. Thanks!

There's lots of stuff available. Check out the B&H website to find what you need. Best of luck.

I recently purchased the Pixel Pro TW-283 release but found it so complicated to set up that I postponed the complete arrangement. Then I read that if it wasn't going to be used for a while to remove the batteries which I then did. I wanted it to take a shot of the crescent moon with Venus to the East that was last night! Duh! Could do with some advice as to using it more frequently. I have the Nikon D750.

Does the D800 have Bluetooth? Maybe you can trigger the camera using Nikon's smartphone app.

Depends on what you are using the remote for
I use a wired 36" MC-30-A Nikon brand release most of the time, I have tried aftermarket units and found they just don't hold up my Nikon units are at least 10 years old well worth double the price of the aftermarket junk, most failed due to crappy wire!!

The CamRanger should work. It is quiet reliable.

The best I've used is the Nikon set; WR-T10/R10/A10. This unit does not require a hot shoe mounted receiver. And, on the professional series cameras, mounts on the front so it's not in the way of handling, L-brackets, etc. I think it's been discontinued, but you should be able to fine a used one. Especially since Nikon released the bluetooth wireless trigger that doesn't need any receiver.

I used the Pixel Pro as well. It does work as expected. It fits its purpose, low cost rarely used. I have to re-train myself on it when ever I use it. I have not tried the Snapbridge function. Usually though, I use a delayed shutter release when I can.

I use this on my Nikon D3x...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/253989530623
Attaches via the 9-pin connector.

Works well for me, albeit it is not the easiest to setup.
Be prepared to invest some time getting familiar with this unit.

btw I also have/use the Nikon MC-30A Remote Trigger Release for product assignments.

This works flawlessly and has paid for itself many times over in studio time savings.

Note: You really don't need a remote release for typical studio work... Many times I have to double check that the talent's hair and makeup are flawless just prior to shutter release. To this end I use Mirror up Mode (Mup) btw, you set this on the left side Mode Dial. A picture will be taken automatically if no operations are performed for about 30 seconds after the mirror is raised.

This works extremely well for many of my fashion and beauty scenarios, however you'll need to get familiar with this first, takes a bit of practice but it's a god send owing to zero cost and bullet proof reliability. Note the add on hardware releases are always a pain in the tush to setup and use. ALWAYS remove the batteries from these devices between use, you've been warned...

Hope this helps... Cheers Thomas

Thank you folks for your actual experiences. That’s what I wanted, real life experiences, such as not having the big receiver mounted on the hot shoe, durability and ease of use.

I had already googled it and there is such a multitude of choices and designs that I didn’t know any more than I did before.

I can not find a Nikon bluetooth wireless trigger on the B&H site. What are you referring to?

I used the Vello Freewave wireless remote when I had a D500. It worked very well, capable of triggering single shot, continuous, delayed or "bulb." More expensive than the ML3. But being wireless, it had the advantage over infrared of not requiring line-of-sight, and being able to trigger from a much greater distance (320 feet vs. 16 feet.)

I have used one of these on a Nikon D810. It has two identical units. One is set (by you) to be the transmitter and the other the receiver. The receiver goes into the flash hot shoe, and there is a connecting wire to the camera. The reason you see it cheap on eBay is that it is a discontinued model.

I use the Camranger2 when I shoot interiors because I can adjust settings from a tablet or laptop and activate remotely. It works very well in that setup. Otherwise, I have a few Vello Freewave wireless sets that I use when out and about or shooting different cameras on tripods.

I used to have other wireless remotes, Pixels among them, but gave them away and settled on a couple of corded remotes, the Vellos and a Vello Shutterboss.
