I was in my backyard when a couple of these Red Beauties started to buzz my yard & finally came to rest in a few places...I've never gotten pics of these like this before. I am giving credit to the new EF 70 300 IS II Nano USM lens I recently bought from Dave on here at the UHH. It really wakes up my Canon T8i with a lot of new limits I am exploring. You just HAVE to see these in Download! The veins in the wings are incredible, & checkout the spikes on the legs! I would not want those to grab me if I were a bug!
At first I was setup in Shutter Prioroty to capture birds in flight & just started shooting when one landed & let me approach, but soon switched over to Av for more depth of field with these stationary targets. All handheld 8-15 feet from my intended quarry. I like being able to stand back & take this kind of shots. Enjoy really pops in download! Walt
They are beautiful! Nice work, capturing these.

Long zoom closeups have become my favorite way to shoot. There are several folks here who post a lot of 'Dragons' and it's truly amazing how varied they are. There are a nearly unlimited number of insects to shoot and all are interesting in their own way. Add to the insects all the things they are surrounded by and you'll never run out of targets in the warm months. Be aware that the Dragonfly, Damsel Fly, and Dobsonfly, at least in this area are all called "Snake Doctors". I don't think they actually have anything to do with snakes, but they do frequent the same kind of habitat as do many snakes which is where I think the nickname comes from. It's nice to see people getting the bug for the bugs. Nice shots!
Excellent set of these male Flame Skimmers. Fine detail and lighting. Well done.

I have never seen a dragon like this one!!! They are incredible machines with an AI fly-by-wire control system second to none.
Outstanding photos, Mustanger
Very nice! The male Flame skimmers are one of my favorite subjects. Shooting dragonflies is addicting, so keep it up. Not a bad habit at all.

Hi Muddyvalley! Glad to meet you...Walt here. I just learned above that these are Flame Skimmers! I like that name, easy to remember & appropriate. I've always loved watching them but never knew their names. Incredibily beautiful aren't they?
