Now that you are this good begin to think of the background.

Excellent point. All I was thinking about was the bug. Composition has always been a weak point in my images.

Impressive set Bob. With the small DOF you have to "square yourself up" with the dragon. It can be very important if you are trying to capture the field markings on their thorax or abdomen for ID. It can be very tricky as I'm sure you've found that even the slightest movement can spook them. All of your dragons are Blue Dashers except the green one which is a female Eastern Pondhawk. Fine work.

Thank you Doc, I have a water garden in my backyard that attracts the dragons. The Blue Dashers seem to predominate but there are other species, but I have not been able to get them to accept my presence and land. I well keep observing their preferred landing sites and wait for them to come to me.

Looks to me like you are off to a great start. Be advised, this can become very addictive. Pretty soon you will know what each type is and whether it is a male or female. Doc Shark will be a great help here. OK, I'm off to shoot some of my own!

Oh no, not another obsession. I have "Dragonflies & Damselflies of Georgia and the Southeast" by Giff Beaton and will start trying to identify the species I capture.

You are off to a great start. I would suggest a faster shutter speed to eliminate some of the softness in these images. Just a thought. They are quite nice as is.

I will try, the gentleman who was coaching me had me shooting in aperture priority, so the camera was picking SS.
