Its one thing to read or be told about the wing speed of hummingbirds, but it's hard to imagine until you see it. This image was taken at 1/1000s...

Very nice capture. I’ve been trying my hand at hummers the last few days and know how hard it is to get sharp focus like this. And yes, those wings are moving. Nice work!

Nicely done.

Up your SS to 3200 - 4000 or even higher, if you can, w/o too much noise. This will freeze the motion in their wings.

Many articles mention the wing speed is beyond 1/8000. Difficult to stop without flash.

Obviously not fast enough if you are interested in stopping the wings, but you know that. Good demo however of how fast they actually beat. Thanks for posting. You must have quite a setup in your back yard. Maybe you could share that with us some day. I know some people put in a lot of effort in they feeder setups to try to best shots possible. I suspect you are one of those.

I'll attach an informative PDF describing how to stop them but it involves multiple flashes with their output reduced -- making them fire much faster than 1/8000 to stop the wings.
My issue is that I don't want to invest in more strobes and tripods. I used to be a photo gear junkie and don't want to become a repeat offender.
