My wife and I traveled to Mount Desert Island, Maine, home to Acadia National Park, the town of Bar Harbor and several very small fishing villages including Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Bernard. Acadia is unique in that it was the first national park completely amassed from donated lands. Thus the park runs into and out of private properties and villages. Much of the property had belonged to John D. Rockefeller, Jr. who strove to protect the area from development. There are many miles of carriage roads with unique stone bridges and miles of trails and a paved loop road. A unique feature is Cadillac Mountain which overlooks the island. The rays of the rising sun strike the United States at this point first. The park was established in 1919 and was the first national park east of the Mississippi River.
I will post 24 photos that I think best portray the beauty of the island and the nature of the park's past and present.
Please bear with me as I post the photos. I hope you enjoy the tour.
