About three years ago, I bought a 24-120 mm f/4 as a "sometimes alternative" to my 17-55 mm f/2.8. It's a little smaller and lighter, but it is much more agile. It has become the predominant lens on my D500. I find that I rarely miss the 7mm when using the 24-120. Its always possible to shoot a quick three-shot panorama, if necessary. It just depends on how and what you shoot.

Yes, this, exactly.
I shoot a lot of events with people moving about, where stitching a pano is not really practical, though I have shot whole rooms stitched to get the feel for the venue.
