This is a full-body side view of the hornet that I caught the other day that I staged for a focus stacking session. I'm not sure of the species so I would appreciate an identification.

Wow fascinating! It sort of resembles a Eastern sicada killer, but, then again, I just don't know. Great Photo!

A small wasp, about 1/2 inch long. There are about 3 semi-obscure families that look pretty similar, but I lean to Thynnidae. It looks a lot like Myzinum obscurum, but I am not 100%. See https://bugguide.net/node/view/377784

Mark, Thanks for coming to the ID rescue once again. That's exactly what it is and it's a female at that. I always make an effort to use BugGuide, however, I seldom have success and it is less than user-friendly for my limited knowledge of entomology.

I find it to be a lot like trying to look up a word in a dictionary when you don't have any idea of how to spell it which is why you want to look it up.

Penny, that's what I thought it was also, however, the yellow colorations did not match. Mark identified it as a female Myzinum obscurum wasp.

My pleasure. Actually, these sorts of wasps can be difficult.
