I have read that an adapter is needed to use a legacy flash on the R7. I have an 550EX I intend to put on an R7 when I get it. Has anyone tried using an older flash on the R7 without an adapter?

Page 67 of the EOS R7 would seem to say your 550EX will attached directly to the camera.
I now have only 580EX-II flash units. These have a locking mechanism on the flash when pushed into the hot shoe. I can see how these newest versions cannot be connected directly to the R7. Kind of an interesting decision by Canon. But, the EOS R7 seems to be fine for the older models.

Maybe there's are review on utube that speaks to the issue directly. I couldn't find a camera review in text form that does. Nor do I have the actual equipment.
But, Canon knows all their EOS equipment, going back to 1987. Their other manuals speak to a lot more detail of all their various historic EOS compatible flash types. The text from page 69 would seem to mention only some specific models are excluded, rather than just three specific models are 'known' to the manual writers in 2022.
OK - lets complicate things. I usually use a Vello off camera flash cord OCS-C1.5 which has a level lock at the hot shoe. Can this be plugged into the R7 without an adapter?

If you ask Canon they would likely decline to comment about nonCanon accessories.
If you ask Vello you may get no response.
If you wait to cross that bridge when you come to it, que sera sera for sure. Maybe, with good luck, some hogster has already crossed that bridge and can reply.

Why not be safe about it?
Get the adapter and no worries, stress or other such nonsense.

I answered your other post about this subject several hours before you wrote this one. Maybe my answer did not relate because I use a knock off. In case you did not read all the replys to your first post on this subject, here is what I wrote.
"I also read the manual before I got the R7. I thought an adapter would be needed also. I went to a R7-R10 preview by Canon/USA at Schiller's in STL.I asked the Canon rep about that. He looked surprised, took the shoe off the flash and said, it has the 5 prongs so you should not need one.
I just tried my Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II on my R7 and it worked fine. It is a knockoff of the Canon 600EX-RT II.
Try your flash before you buy an adaptor.
Disclaimer......I do not do a lot of flash photography."

Which is why I asked B&H where I placed the R7 order. I'm waiting for a response.

Thanks for the response. I did read it and wasn't sure the Youngnuo was representative of my situation. I'm not even sure if the "incompatibility" is mechanical or electrical.
I do a lot of flash photography.

Who knows!
According to the R7 manual, but Canon's own off camera shoe cord cannot be directly used in the R7's hot shoe... adapter required.
BUT... they only address their current version of shoe cord: OC-E3. So earlier ones fit? I dunno, but doubt it.
It's a bit odd that according to the manual the 430EX III can be used directly. To me that flash's foot doesn't look any different from all the other flashes (personally I have three 500EX and three 580EX II, as well as several off-camera shoe cords and an ST-E2 controller).
It will be interesting to see what B&H can tell us.
I heard from B&H. They responded within 1 day.

You do not need the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter B&H # CAOCSAADE1 to use your flash/cord with the Canon R7. I had an agent in-store test this. Would you like us to remove this item from your order?"
