We discovered a hornets' nest on the side of our swimming pool the other day and basically destroyed it with spray before taking it apart which resulted in some very interesting pictures.

Those are awesome photos. Never seen anything quite like it from the inside. The last one showing emerging young is special. Can see shadows of the young inside the closed nacelles. National Geo level work you have here.

Those are white face hornets! Mean buggers! What did you spray the nest with?

Yes they are and NOT welcomed at our swimming pool!! We sprayed with Spectracide wasp & hornet spray which basically melted the exterior of the nest and killed the adults inside. When we examined the interior the next day we found larvae and emerging individuals which were still alive, but not for long!!

Wouzza! What a fantastic look at something often missed. We had two of these but they hung high in the tree. When they unraveled the innards weren't so clearly visible. "WeightWatchers" love these things, as big as they get the remain very light in that department. You now qualify for the resident "Science Guy/Gal" of the UHH. Very nice work, and thanx for posting.

Thank you! Looking at the cells close-up is quite an education as to how these things develop. The hornets had only begun their second layer and if left alone the nest could have grown to the size of a basketball or larger - think about how many offspring that would have produced!!!

We sprayed after dark when they were in the nest - even then we saw a straggler entering - boy, was it in for a surprise!!
