Retrieve Photos From iPhone 4

I replaced my iPhone 4 with a 7 a few months ago. Today, I plugged my iPhone 4 into my PC (Windows 10) to download the 1,000+ photos from it to my PC. Windows created a folder, named iPhone 4, and a folder under that called Internal Storage. I clicked on the sub-folder thinking I'd see all my photos, but nothing was there. I right-clicked on the sub-folder and selected Download. The progress dialog box came up and appeared to download something, but the Internal Storage sub-folder didn't get any files stored there.

What am I doing wrong, or is it even possible to download photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC?

Are you sure the photos are physically on the phone? They maybe in your Apple cloud. If so you should be able to see them on your new phone. Or you can use the iCloud app on your computer to get them.

They aren’t on iCloud and don’t appear on my new phone either. I had a friend plug the phone into her MacBook and she downloaded the images to my flash drive. Problem solved so consider this post closed. I still don’t understand why the files won’t appear in Windows file explorer.

I am speculating here but I think in the earlier days of iphones, which an iphone 4 would have qualified, photos were only accessible through Apple's itunes software. Also since WIN 10 probably was not around when the iphone 4s were being sold and used it does not recognize the iphone's image storage structures.

In the earlier days, I think Apple thought that people with iphones would be using Apple Mac computers so the iphone to Microsoft interface was not a consideration. However, that later changed when Apple realized that people loved iphones AND Microsoft based computers and not all iphone users were Mac users.

I also think that both Apple and Microsoft realized that at least in the cell phone world they had to be compatible with each other AND Google's Android system. Though problems still exist.

I transfer images from Iphone 4 to the PC all the time. On the Iphone you have to allow the PC to access it.

That is good to know. I remember early users of iphones in 2007 had issues connecting to Microsoft OS at the time, probably XP or Vista. Apple even developed a version of itunes that ran on Microsoft OS to address the problem.

Maybe Win 10 incorporated changes to handle the earlier versions of iphones.

Wow! 1,000! That's amazing! It's good you were able to get them off the phone.

But it's only from IPhone to PC not the other way around. Never know how to transfer it the other way around except via the internet (email, Icloud etc..)

Yes. The capability to see the phone as a hard drive came in versions of iOS that won’t run on a 4.

I’ll respond anyway. I’ve never had trouble copying from one to the other. I just copied 100 photos from my iPad to a folder on my desktop in about two minutes.

Mostly family and friends snapshots taken over a 5 or 6 year period. Keepers would probably be about half to 2/3 of those.
