I recently purchased a Nikon D3200, getting some nicely detailed photos, but when I went to process the RAW files in Photoshop CS III, they would not open. I noticed the file extension was NEF instead of CR2 like my Canon camera used. CR2 was recognized by Photoshop. Is there any way to convert? The only way to use these NEF Raw photos was to open them in Nkon's Viewer NX2, which doesn't seem to have the editing options Photoshop does, unless I haven't figured it out yet. NX2 has an option to convert to TIFF, which is usable by Photoshop, but not with all those RAW options I was getting giddy thinking about using with my new 24 megapixel Nikon dream machine.
Went to site, it was confusing, had info about all kinds of products, not much in the way of what the products do or how much. It did say something about Photoshop CS6 for $19.99 for first six months. But what after that? Maybe an upgrade to CS5 first? How about elements? I just got Elements 9 with a printer, I am trying to see if it does Raw files...yes it says it does but not NEF, I just tried... maybe an update for that is cheaper.
I have spent an hour online and in the Adobe help menus but no real luck. Does anybody out there know any specific info? I even downloaded a free conversion program but found all it does is convert NEF to tiff or jpeg, Nikons software that came with the camera does that anyhow.
I own PSE-10, but use PicNic within Picasa 3.9 for 95% of all my post processing. both programs are free:

in CS3, open adobe bridge (located in the upper right hand corner) and then you can locate your card and open the files. They'll open in a raw setting first where you can make some adjustments, and then open into Photoshop.
Some how my windows program opens them to see. I have two pictures in my file of same pic. One. Is raw and one is jpeg.

www.adobe.com/downloads/updatesLook for your product in the list on the left, if there is an update for your situation that's where it will be.
I bought a new camera (Sony RX100) that was not included for RAW processing by Adobe until ACR 7.2 or Lightroom 4.2.
I've been using Elements and 10 would not upgrade past ACR 6.7.
That forced an upgrade to Photoshop Elements 11. The interface has changed a lot, but other than that I like it.

When I bought my D7000 I had the same problem. I have PS Elements 9. I downloaded a (free I think) update from adobe. I can open NEF files with elements now with no problem.
It seems the downloads that say they work don't. Suggested solution from all sources seems to be spend more money first. But I don't trust spending money after being misled. Spend hundreds it seem to get latest Photshop, etc. I don't have unlimited money, just tapped out getting the D3200 and an external flash, setting me back hundreds. &^#@* Nikon for creating a file extension incompatable with everything. Adobe even has said on its site it has received similar input from others and that they and Nikon are working together for the future. Great.
