It's Doc's birthday!! He was
87 when he performed this classic jazz composition (written by Dizzy Gillespie) in 2015. God bless him, he's now 95!! Here he is performing with the North Texas State Jazz Band.

note: North Texas State was and still is a mecca for jazz.
Enjoy,
Mark
Nice! I'm glad he's still around.

Mark, Thanks again for an interesting (Jazz) Music Post and Link. Wow, Doc is 95!
It just so happens I am familiar with the Music contributions of North Texas State University. Many years ago my wife and I both took a History of Jazz class at California State University, Fullerton. We intentionally sat apart and did not let anyone know that we were a couple for quite some time. Anyway, the instructor's ex-husband used to be one of the Music and Band instructors at North Texas State University. Eventually we became friends with our Instructor (after the term ended). We ended up with several LPs of the North Texas State Band late 60s - early 70s Lab Recordings. Definitely, many good players came out of that program over the year. I found on the LPs we got several future members of Frank Zappa's band(s). Notably some of the Fowler brothers.

Thanks Mike for that interesting note. I think I become aware of North Texas State jazz influence when I was in my 20's/30's. If I recall, Maynard Ferguson's band had a couple of players from there. One of his first albums, Birdland Dream Band, I still have on vinyl in a box in a storage area.

Thanks, Mark
He was always the band leader and occasionally played but it was easy to overlook how he was an accomplished trumpet player in his own right. Still had it at 85!

Thanks, Mike!!
Quite the character on the Tonight Show and a very accomplished musician.
Mark
He looked good and healthy for 87.

LOL. Here we go again, I'll want a Maynard Ferguson album or two.

Mark, I really enjoyed watching this and thanks for the update! I saw Doc at the Ohio State fair many years ago. Great performer. I watch Carson pretty much every night at bed time on the Carson channel…..good memories.
Still going--wow! I always liked him.
I listened to the entire video and enjoyed immensely--Doc’s still got it!
