Wishing you all a safe, happy 4th of July.
We are keeping a low profile over the holiday; no road trip, but a neighborhood picnic/party at our Tot lot.
This issue is a bit of a grab-bag.
#1 : Temple by F. L. Wright about 30 minute drive north from center-city Phila. I visited several times during construction. The visit after the pyramid roof was erected, the interior space was an unbelievable experience which made me a bit dizzy. After bldg was furnished for use, it seemed much smaller and not so magical.
#2 & 3: F.L. Wright again. The Guggenheim in NYC. Imposing from street. Confused circulation patterns inside. One is supposed to take elevator to top of building and walk down the spiral galleries. Not everyone does this.
#4, 5 ,& 6: I take you to Montana. Majestic scenery. Glacier Nat. Park is my favorite of all US parks to date.
#7: Illinois Government Center by H. Jahn. Most unusual building, especially inside where there is a full height atrium/lobby and the most glitzy materials everywhere. It opened to critical reviews and I believe there was talk of demolition about a year ago. No further info.
#8 & 9: Chicago again; this time to a historic building Built 1899-1904 by Architect Louis Sullivan now known as Carson Pirie Scott Department Store. Street level and entrance covered in remarkable ornamentation.
#10: If I may be permitted an ego trip....Fort Raleigh Visitor Center (shown) and access to the Lost Colony performance amphitheater; and the Headquarters building for Ft. Raleigh, Kitty Hawk and National Seashore Parks. L. Biond Architect.
This was the largest of many projects designed for the National Park Service Eastern Office of Design and Construction.
