Smaller, lighter, more cost effective, .......improved ISO and AF performance is what allows this to happen ....
Oh, BTW sharper too ...

Well stated!!! I never even considered the z mount nikon 24-70 f2.8 S lens. I got the 24-120mm f 4 S lens instead and the results With it on my Z 9 are pretty amazing.

As a general note for all: IMHO, the 500 F5.6 PF is an incredible lens which I have used in both DSLRs as well as mirrorless versions. It definitely is a good choice for some outside sports, although the new 400/2.8 TC is MUCH better! Best of luck.

What do you think about the new 400 F4.5 just announced? I don't shoot sports professionally, (although I did shoot sports video for TV for many years), so I'm intrigued.

If the new Nikon 400 f4.5 S lens is a good as my Z mount 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 S lens, it will be a very good lens for a Z body. Just add a Z mount 1.4x tc and you have a 560mm f6.3 as well as a 400mm f4.5. It weighs 2.7 lbs w/o the tc. For a Nikon owner who does not own the 100-400mm Z mount or the 500mm f5.6 pf FX mount lens, this lens is will provided needed reach without having to buy the much more expensive Nikon Z mount 400mm f2.8 S lens. I would have ordered it but since I have the 100-400mm S and the 500mm f5.6 pf FX, I have this focal range covered.

Note that the Nikon Z mount 400mm f4.5 S lens is not a PF lens.

I have been pleasantly surprised by all the Z mount lenses I have purchased so far, with the S versions leading the pack. Since I already have the 400/2.8 TC, I will not be buying the 400/4.5, but, based on experiences so far, I would expect it to be good. I really wish Nikon would produce several other Z lenses such as the rumored 85/F1.2 and perhaps a 105 or a 135. I have a long list! The new 400/2.8TC and Z9 announcement allowed me to completely transition to the Z system, and I'm happy I did. Best of luck.
