Had to purchase an SB-5000 today as it was the only Nikon flash available where I am as my old SB-600 went faulty and I needed one for a job tomorrow.
Whilst from testing it's certainly functioning well the rear LCD illumination is extremely poor and I'm wondering if it's due to being faulty, poor design or advertising misrepresentation. With my screen illuminated by pressing one of the buttons, it's nowhere as bright as this Nikon advertisement, even in a totally dark room. Has anyone else found this?
I also can't believe how small the EV reading is.
I have an SB-700 and SB-5000. The SB-5000 has a screen contrast setting in the menus. I have the screen contrast set fairly high with mine. It has a small effect on the contrast but it helps.
I never owned an SB-600 but I know it has a bright screen. I found this photo online that shows the SB-600 and SB-700 side by side. I have an SB-700 and SB-5000. Both have about the same screen brightness.

I own four (4) SB-5000 units, along with many others, and have never had any screen brightness issues with any of these. Best of luck.
