Just wondering if anyone sells their work at art shows. I’m curious what type of tent system you use and the method you use to hang the photographs. Thank you.

I have a Very Close Friend who sells Photos at 3 different Shows and He does Really Well. He has a Hanging setup where he will setup a Landscape Image that is broken up into 3 parts, then he Hangs 1 24" by 30" up. But he has 12 different Containers where he will put images of different Wildlife and Birds (BIF). He will let the Customer pick a Frame if they see one that they like and if they don't he will show them the Image that he has of that Subject, which is in its own Rolled up Container of the Photo that they want and he seeks them either a 8 by 10 or 11 by 14. People will shell out $45-$55 for an 8 by 10, and they will buy the 11 by 14's at $65-$70 the same way. But, what does is actually really been working, as I put some of my Photos for sale also, He has found that People really like the smaller Prints to Hang in their Kitchens and Bathrooms and even in their Bedrooms. So, it is very Profitable due to selling so many Prints. So, we both usually sell out every show. Plus he has Brochures for no charge to give to Customers that contain all of His available Images. And He always gets a Phone Call from someone wanting a Larger Print that they can buy and they choose between Acrylic, Metal, Canvas, and now he has them available on Wood. We both use the same Lab that does great work and since we use them about every week, they give us a very good discount. You have to sell Quality and Back it Up by making sure that the Image comes back to Him or I for Inspection, then it its shipped off to the Customer. He has some Customers that are Repeat and since we usually shoot together, we have similar shots. Heck, I just landed a Pediatricians office and there are 3 doctors with 12 Examining Rooms plus the waiting area and their Private Offices as well. They wanted some of My Abstract Work and Zoo Photos because the Kids really do react better when they go into the Room and see something Familiar. Sorry for the Mini-Book, But Yes there is Money to be made. He and I are doing a 50/50 deal since we are Friends and we sold $5500.00 last Weekend. And when we do Ann Arbor Art show, we always sell about $1200.00, so if You have the right show go for it. My Brother and I were talking and He made a Great Point, if the Economy is a little rough then for some reason Art sells. Have fun and remember that is You have a Variety of Shots, You will make money, but be sure to pass out those Brochures and You will be surprised at the response and maybe You will have a Doctor or other Professional Person order up.

We did art shows for a number of years using the various methods described by other responders to your query, (White EZ Up 10'x10" tent bought at Sam's Club , etc.). For large print picture display we bought 4x8' sheets of plastic lattice, ( the type with the small holes not the the type with large holes) and hung them on 3 sides of the tent frame with zip ties. You can also use zip ties to hang the framed prints on the lattice. We uses "S" hooks also. We placed 4x8' folding tables vertically from front to back from the tent opening in the in the center of the tent on which we displayed smaller pictures on easels we made from PVC. I will be happy to give you plans to make them if you are interested PM me. We also used self assembled cardboard file boxes (bought at Staples) for mounted prints 8x10 and smaller that people could flip through. We did invest is a spinning wire rack to display our 4x6 photo post cards, note cards, and prints. To be perfectly honest, we never did well at the Summer Art shows and craft fairs. Several times we did not even make the booth rental fee back. One word of advice, tents get miserably hot in the sunshine, bring some method of moving air around, (we used battery operated fans because many venues do not provide a source of electricity). People will be more likely to enter your tent if it is cooler.
