A New Shift in Computers?

I've been seeing quite a bit online concerning small computers, like Apple's Mini. Other companies make them in various configurations at much lower prices that Apple charges. When you look at the size of a desktop computer and realize that it is overkill, the mini makes sense.

These don't look very impressive - no RGB - but do you want to impress or compute? In most cases, you can open these and increase the memory and storage - and probably the processor, too.

I use quite a good number of them in industrial production machines. They are a lot cheaper than those designed for the job although not as tough. For my own use I don't really care saving room for the computer because the monitors are way too big. If I have room for monitors I have room for a large easy to maintain case and have a lot of slots for accessories. I need several ethernet ports and also I need the old RS232 serial ports too.

Depends on your application. When I get a computer I want it to be powerful enough to run the most demanding job I hand it.

I do use less-capable computers to do non-demanding tasks. A mini would have been just fine to save the data from my weather station, but I just bought an old used computer for $25 to do that. There is no real scarcity of old used computers for short money.

I swap hard drives on these little computers often (they are SSD's). What are the ramjets?

The "hard drive" is an M.1 card, and it can be changed easily, as can the memory. The ramjets apply only to the military versions - not available to the general public.

Oh no of course. Most of these PC's are intended to be used by users that do not have the right to install software, listen to CD or watch DVD movies. They can surf the net (perhaps with youtube blocked out), they can have their email, their Microsoft Office Suite but that's about all they can do with the PC. They are not supposed to copy files out of the computer either.

No. Unfortunately, computer makers think we don't want optical drives. We can pay to stream music and movies, instead.
