While June is usually the deadest month for interesting bird photos here in SoCal, there are still some opportunities...sometimes quite interesting. Hope you enjoy these.

PS: can the Night-heron (the Yellow-crowned species is uncommon in these parts) swallow a crab whole (see below)? Yes. In fact, mere minutes later it caught and swallowed a second crab of the same size...then it perched on a sand dune and just sat there...probably "processing" 2 crabs...quite a meal.

Nice set. Once watched a Blue Heron swallow 4-5 Blue Crabs in about 5 minutes while it worked the marsh edge of a salt pond. Amasing what a heron or egret can swallow.

Thanks, tcthome. It's fun to share interesting animal behaviors...and to capture it in photos was lucky. I appreciate the kind comments and emojis. jak

Very fine series. Especially like the heron enjoying a meal.

Thanks very much. I think it's obvious I also enjoyed catching that series of photos. I shared the best captures but caught several other shots showing the process. Thanks for the kind words. Have a great week and weekend. jak

Thanks, Curmudgeon. That's very kind of you. I thought of you when we had a freak monsoon rain here in SoCal. It swept through with lightning and thunder, dropping up to an inch in the local mountains (but appeared to be less here along the coast). I think this is the monsoon season for you. Hope it works out well...we can all use rain. Have a great weekend, including the July 4 holiday. I'm actually going out on a survey along the coastal wetlands on Monday...a monthly event that is to help determine development and restoration plans along the coast. Take care. jak
