I bought a new Fit in 2009, Jerry. It was one of the best cars I've ever owned (and there have been a lot). I was getting in the low to mid 40's. The storage capacity was incredible and with the stick shift it was a ball to drive. I notice them on the road and they all (pretty much) have held up well. I sold it after 4 years when my granddaughter was born to get an all-wheel RAV4 so that we could get to her in the snow. Great car !

Nice red!

We travel in the RV from time to time when we happen to come upon a toll road. Unfamiliar with where I am, I find it very confusing and there are only moments to make a decision as to what to do when in the flowing traffic. When there is no "toll attendant" to assist me, I've often driven on through and waited to get the toll notice in the mail.

I drove 470 miles yesterday, with a lot of that on the Mass Pike. Fortunately, all their toll booths have been replaced with overhead transducer readers, so there are no lines at toll booths. What surprised me is that people from MA pay a lower toll that others. Since they use it more, I would think they would pay more. Of course, having everyone pay the same amount makes more sense. My Fit averaged 47.5 MPG for that trip.

Although the human toll collectors either lost their jobs or gotten transferred, it's common knowledge that toll takers pay a heavy toll in their health as they work. They have cars stopping and accelerating just a couple of feet away from them during their entire shift. Without special respirators, they are breathing in all sorts of undesirable stuff.

I never driven on or seen a toll road but probably will in 2024 when we visit the east coast. How do they work without a collection basket?

Seeing as I live in the NWUSA I don't know what a transactor is, but it sounds like a device to lift money from your pocket!

Remember those days very well. I always had a roll of quarters in the car.

I think all the states with toll roads have information sites regarding this issue. I suggest doing a google search.

I am not familiar with toll roads in that I avoid them for the most part. Several of the mapping services can plot directions avoiding certain situations with highways, toll roads and the like. The toll roads are getting cameras to take pictures and follow up on the license plates on cars for contact (and charging) information. In some situations, one can accidentally drive in a toll lane (See Atlanta, Ga).

And there are states with differing toll systems within the state.

Best to do the homework before getting on the trip.

As the Rogers would sing, "Happy Trails to you."

We have an EZ Pass for when we visit our son in Pittsburgh, it works on the toll roads in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. We've used it to go to Maine, too.

In Illinois they used to charge 3-4 times as much if you paid cash as if you used EZ Pass.

As I understand it, Texas doesn't support EZ Pass (they have their own transponder network), but I haven't been there in a long time.

I used to drive on the Connecticut turnpike in the dark ages. Does anyone else remember having to throw coins in a basket at a toll booth? Invariably, you'd be behind someone who missed the basket and had to get out of the car and look for the coins on the ground and even under their car.

I remember them and the bottlenecks well. When I worked in Chicagoland, they viewed anything on the ground as property of the state. I had to talk my way out of being arrested for getting out to retrieve a miss thrown quarter at an unmanned exit. Of course there occasionally was the clogged machine that didn’t digest the coins and they would accumulate in the basket (I suspect a maintenance person helped themselves because there would be no accounting).

There used to be a person there to take your money and give you change. Now, it's ridiculous. On the NY Thruway, there is a number for you to call, and I guess they bill you. Otherwise, maybe the police show up at your door - or maybe the Mounties. You can probably get an EZPass before you leave. They're free. In FL, we had to pay for the Florida pass.

Lat time I was up to visit, we went out in my vehicle and my sister road with us and had her transponder in her pocket book, and I'm out of state with no transponder....lol...NYS billed us both.

You have to pay rolls to drive on the roads, must admit it is getting similar in England roving towns and cities because I drive a diesel car want me to pay up to £12.50 if I drive in to London.
Blow that I never go to London now an I never buy anything from a company based in London. My diesel car has particulate filter fitted and should the filter start to get full up then alarm sounds on the dashboard and you then drive for forty miles at fifty mph and the filter cleans it self.

The push to get everyone to buy Diesel in the UK was a huge mistake. The amount of pollution that Diesel cars produce was grossly underestimated and understated. I was last in London in 2019 before the pandemic. The pollution was so acrid that my eyes were watering and my lungs were burning when I went outside. My feeling is that those who bought Diesel cars should not be blamed for this, but the pollution in densely populated areas is so bad at times that you have to do something to get it under control. Perhaps the government over there should buy back Diesel cars and replace them with petrol cars in the short term with the goal of having the country go electric.

I had to deal with toll booths in Ireland in 2001 and 2005. They were on some roads around Dublin. They were manned at the time. If they hadn't been, I would have had a really hard time figuring out their money with no prior familiarity. (Especially in 2001 when they were still on the Irish pound.)
