While photographing wild birds in my backyard, I noticed a Black Capped Chickadee who showed up. Since this is not a common breed seen at my feeders and I was eager to learn more, I discovered that Black Capped Chickadees have some very interesting qualities. I encourage the bird experts on Ugly Hedge Hog to please feel free to share their comments with me since I am a novice on birds. Shooter41

Actually, that is interesting. I would not expect that from a bird to display or learn an apparent new behavior. Amazing she covered the eggs. That sort of behavior modification would be more expected of a mammal like a dog or example. My sneaky hound dog can open doors and locks. And restacks things to stand on to get to places or things she wants. Constantly have to watch her. A very smart bird is the Crow.

Their brain (hippocampus) actually grows in size nearing winter so they can better remember their seed stashes. You may find this article of interest:

We think the Chickadee should be the state bird of Michigan instead of the Robin.

The more that I actually watch the many different birds in my yard, going about their daily business, raising familes, etc. etc. I've come to realize they are in general very intelligent. I have a daily visit by a pair of Carolina Wrens who I helped to gather their babies and relocate when their nest was destroyed by a squirrel, babies on the ground (to soon), one into a water bucket, rescued all three, showed the parents and escorted them into the woods. They could not fly yet, but were very capable climbers. They (parents) let me know their appreciation everytime they see me, sit in front of me and chirp, amazing critters.

I have witnessed and photographed that behavior many times over the years. Other birds do similar things with food.
Thanx for sharing this interesting bit.
