I was recently visiting my sister in the Huntington, West Virginia area. A local controversy involves which of the local hot dog stands makes the best dogs. Not having eaten any hot dogs during my trip, I do not have an opinion. My brother-in-law has an odd sense of humor (which is why we get along so well), he did bring me to the one hot dog stand that probably is the most notorious: HILLBILLY Hot Dogs! As you can see from the following photos the "décor" is somewhat questionable and definitely an acquired taste (pardon the pun). It was at least an 1/2 hour wait to place an order, it is popular with the motorcycle crowd. I didn't take any great photos worthy of display, just documented one of Americas little known local oddities. I did get a chuckle out of the visit, so I hope you enjoy the pics.

Cool shots. Now the question is: how are the hot dogs? Did you get them in the classic southern style - mustard, chili and onions? Or are you one of those fringe connoisseurs that adds slaw? (And yellow or brown mustard?)

Those are great photos of a unique place! It made to curious enough to check out their website. I would eat there and even stand in line.

Personally, I'm a bit of a purest, only sweet relish and ketchup. I believe the hillbilly dogs come with a variety of toppings, I wasn't there long enough nor adventurous enough to try one. My brother-in-law said they're actually very eatable as long as you don't venture too far from a bathroom. He lives about 1/2 hour away, so he's pushing the envelope.

Glad you made the visit! Despite the impression the “decor” gives, Hillbilly Hot Dogs is one of the most successful local restaurants in this area. It’s been featured on “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” and in numerous publications. A bit kitschy, but fun! Sadly, the founder passed away recently but his wife is keeping it going.

Stewart’s used to be the place for hot dogs in Huntington. When the son took over, the quality slipped. Now I think Frost Top is considered the place for dogs.
Haven’t tried the the place the OP brought up. Time for another road trip!

I used to love the hot dogs at Stewart's. Sorry to hear the quality has slipped. I grew up there.

Like I said in the original post, I'm not getting into the debate about who make the best dogs. I knew the place was known beyond the local area, but didn't realize how far. I'm glad others can appreciate its uniqueness and I'm glad that it will carry on despite the owners demise, may he RIP

Hillbilly has so many varieties and toppings that you’re sure to find what you like! The decor is, yes, odd but it’s their shtick and it works. A side note: despite the front of the house appearance, they are reputed to have one of the cleanest kitchens in the area.
