GM has filed a patent application for a device described as a “Thorax And Thigh Airbag System For Reclined Passengers.” The new system described in the patent is intended to keep reclining passengers safe in the event of a collision, with possible applications for upcoming GM autonomous vehicles. Elon the Musk will have to pay GM to allow Teslas to be "sleeper cars." Boeing will be very interested in this also, pilots need their rest. Imagine all the future applications for a reclining air-bagged sleep!
Hahaha - Why not just fill the passenger compartment with airbags.

Don't think air bags, thorax, thighs or any other one, will help in an aircraft crash....prefer parachutes
There are jackets for motorcycle riders that inflate in case of a crash. That and a helmet would be a good start for riding in a car. : )
Volvo many years ago developed the seat belt and never put a patent on it so all auto manufactures could put this life saving feature in there cars.

Nice! Many companies file patents just to be able to sue other companies who might be infringing on them.
Just a little advice, Never, Never, Never, allow a passenger to operate or even hold onto a Laptop while your driving!
Guillotine!!!!

Dr. Jonas Salk refused to patent the first polio vaccine.
I can understand why people/companies file patents. R&D is expensive, and lacking a patent, they would never be able to recover those costs. Even when the IRS allows accelerated depreciation, it can be a crap shoot.
Toyota patented the sliding door mechanism for vans. We paid them royalties for years so we could use them in everything from Econolines to Aerostars.

Perhaps it is for royalties rather than lawsuits.

Lots of truth, there.
In the 1990's Ford came out with the Windstar minivan. It's design called for a single passenger side sliding door, and we would be paying Toyota per click. An engineer suggested that the Windstar be equipped with sliding doors on each side. They'd already done the structural tests, and it would work. However the executive vice-president for the division nixed the idea as too costly.
That same model year, Chrysler brought out their minivans with sliding doors on both sides.
The Windstar eventually got two sliding doors, but Ford gave up a lot of market share just to save a few bucks per vehicle.

Preston Tucker also suggested seat belts and had them installed in his cars, along with numerous other safety features which the Big Three eventually added to their vehicles.
